Me, 2009

Web Design

By Michael Heikkinen

The RadianceSanDiego.org website has undergone several changes, modifications, and upgrades over the past few years as my web design skills have improved. This version was a benchmark for me in terms of zero-table CSS and Javascript integration. My goal was to produce the kind of rollover effects I had been using in Flash with pure CSS HTML and fairly simple JavaScript. The result is a wide range of features incorporating live Google Maps, a submit form, and extensive photo galleries.
This is a rough draft for SanDiegoSpeedNetworking using many of the techniques I developed for the Radiance site. I found that, on a much simpler site like this, I could quickly and easily modify the code to produce a very clean, neat, and visually plaesing corporate look and feel.
This is a little experiment in making an entire mini website on a single page. The idea behind this design was to get as far away from the boxy looking, table-like, grid look as possible. It took the form of a broken monitor screen and the possible worlds that lie within it.

I did this website for a local restaurant and steakhouse. The header and Home Page Special Features area are Flash objects, and the rest of the site is straight html using zero-table CSS to display dining menus and other information. The site includes live Google Map windows, photo galleries, and a submit form so people can contact them or sign up directly from the website. To see it, go to BullysPrimRib.com.
One of the very first website assignments I had was to completely rebuild a website for a local real estate company. They wanted to improve the look by implementing a horizontal nav bar instead of the vertical one they had, and wanted the overall site structure to be redesigned so it was easier for their staff to manage and update. As is often the case, the site's code and structure was an incomprehensible maze. I fixed all that using framesets and simple html code, making it much easier for them to update. See the result at Capital Growth Properties, Inc.
I built an all Flash Sampler Site to showcase, experiment on, and store all of the little widgets and gadgets, clolor schemes and buttons, etc that I made and like to use. This sampler site also contains some examples of my work that you may not find elsewhere... yet. Click here to view it.
Of course, I think the best use of Flash is in combination with HTML, but for an example of a site that was made completely in Flash, check out both the site as well as all of the content I developed for InnovativeMediaMix.com
Another Flash site I made was for an artist seeking a simple look that would be easy for her to add her own photos without having to call me in every time to do it. The photo galleries check for the existence of a numbered text file containing a photo's caption or title. If it finds it, it loads the photo and the text, then looks for the next highest number.

I was redesigning the Radiance website as an all Flash site when I lost a hard drive with the source files on it. It's definitely unfinished, but I include it here just for reference because there were some really cool design concepts I had worked out. The Pulldown buttons at the top actually load and pull a whole seperate page down in front of the main page. Click here to view it.

UPDATE: Well, I was going to put resources here, but then I started putting together a separate site dedicated just to that and realized there was way too much content to fit in this little box! It's still in progress, but it has a bunch of code and examples, so if that's what you're looking for...
